Male elk grow beautiful sets of antlers.  The antlers drop off, or “shed,” every year beginning in early March.  A new set of antlers immediately begins to grow.  Velvet nubs can be seen within just a few weeks.  The new antler set reaches full size by mid-August and plays an important role in displaying dominance among other males and, during the fall rut, attracting females.
